“Don’t meet your hero.” A friend said.
“Their imperfections may disappoint you.”

Dr Richard Bernstein is my hero. He was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 12, in 1964. At that time, it was a death sentence.

For two decades he followed the recommendations of his doctor and the American Diabetes Association. That caused his health to deteriorate. By 30, he had developed complications.

Their recommendations weren’t working. Being an engineer, he decided to tackle this himself.

He started to bio-hack himself. He recognized the need to drastically reduce carbohydrates. He stabilized his sugars and reversed his complications.

Excited with his findings, he wrote about his technique. Not one medical journal would publish it because he wasn’t a doctor.

So at 41, he decided to quit his job.
Go to medical school.
And publish his techniques in a book.

And he did.

That book has improved the lives of people like me.

Diabetes is his imperfection. Yet, still alive and in excellent health — he is still practicing medicine at the age of 87.

He is showing people like me how to defy the odds.

Somebody needs to redefine imperfection.
