The thrill-seeking gene seems to have skipped my entire family. We don’t understand the appeal of feeling like we’re on the brink of death. Heights make our knees buckle, and we find solace in the comforting embrace of gravity. Yet, in a moment of inexplicable spontaneity, we decided to face our fears and take on a roller-coaster ride.
My brother and I decided to try one together. Channeling my inner Tony Robbins, I pumped up my younger brother ahead of the ride.
“Don’t worry, I’m right beside you.”
“You can do this.”
We buckled in as the ride began its ascent.
Still in motivational-speaker mode, I was still at it…. motivating…
“I am right here.”
“Don’t be afraid.”
The ride started building momentum.
Suddenly it occurred to me that I may plummet to my death.
Too Fast.. This is too fast.
I could have been warm and safe at home.
I tried to close my eyes and breath…. but when we got to the highest point — I lost it.
I can’t do this.
Get me off.
My brother was shocked. He turned to look at me.
Though he was equally terrified, he burst out laughing when he saw me oscillate between crying and laughing at myself.
The Tony Robbins from seconds ago was gone.
Note to self — never volunteer to be a coach.
